Dog Chewing
Dogs and Puppies chew to help them theeth and to explore their surroundings. Older dogs chew due to excessive energy that needs to be worked off, and also due to excessive boredom.
To prevent excessive chewing
Get Rover Plenty of exercise. Cesar Millan says dogs need exercise, discipline, and affection in that order. Try using Roller blading with your dog if you have experience or put him on a treadmill. (not kidding here)
Confine Rover when you can not watch him.
Provide Plenty of appropriate items to chew.
Give Rover a chew toy to distract him away from the furnishings when he is in a chewing mood.
Use a repellant such as bitter apple, or bitter lime on furniture, rugs, baseboard or anywhere else your dog chews on something you don't want him to.
Always give your dog lots of praise for chewing on the right things.
Appropriate chew toys can include everything from a fresh or frozen carrot to the various chew bones, balls and weirld-shaped objects available in pet supply stores.
