Choose an electronic dog fence carefully to avoid hurting your pets
With many choices on the market today,
pet owners need to pick an electronic dog fence that will do the job of
containing their pets without harming them. This is easier said than
done, actually. As is true with so many other things, with an
electronic dog fence you often get what you pay for. Unfortunately,
it's your pets who will ultimately "pay" if you make a poor choice.
Important tips to help you choose an
electronic dog fence to contain your pets safely
First, choose an electronic dog fence
that emits a digital signal to the collars your pets wear. This is
important because analog signals from random radio noise can cause false
triggers.
Next, an electronic dog fence system
should give a warning tone before it administers any unpleasant
shocks to your pets. This is like the classic Pavlov experiments. By
associating the tone with the mild shock, your animals will not trigger
the collar more than a few times at most, and never at the painful
levels. Soon just the loud noise will tell your dogs where the
boundaries are.
If you opt for an underground
electronic dog fence system, be sure to bury the line deep enough. You
don't want rainwater run-off or wild animals who dig to expose it. This
could potentially hurt your pets, especially if the fencing malfunctions
and they get loose.
Finally, be sure to purchase only an
electronic dog fence that offers an automatic shut-off, in case your
pets get caught in the boundary zone for any reason. And don't forget
that these kinds of fencing systems only keep your dogs in. They don't
keep strays or wild animals out. So regular supervision is important.
