The importance of
pet ID tags for identification of lost dogs
Putting pet
ID tags on your dogs is such an easy thing to do; but it never ceases to
amaze me how many owners don't do it. The identification of your dog if
he's lost and then picked up by someone is obviously vitally important.
And pet ID tags are just about the least expensive aspect of having
pets. I often wonder how many people have permanently lost animals
simply because they lacked proper identification. It makes me sad to
think about it.
When
choosing pet ID tags, don't just consider the identification needs,
though. There are a huge variety of choices, so find your puppy a cool
designer tag! Make him proud to be seen in public.
Another
consideration when picking pet ID tags is what information to impart on
the tag itself. The primary purpose is identification, so your name and
phone are a must in case he's lost. And be sure his/her rabies
vaccination tag is present as well. That's the law!
Think
safety when using pet ID tags!
At our home,
we always include the dog's name on pet ID tags as well. This serves a
potentially life-saving purpose when identification alone isn't enough,
like if he becomes lost. Namely, if the person who finds our lost puppy
can see his name on the tag, then it's more likely that the animal will
come when called by the stranger. This might prevent an accident in the
road if our scared and confused pup bolts.
Another
safety consideration that argues in favor of using pet ID tags on your
dogs is one not many people ever think about. But it could well save
his life. And that's for proper identification at the veterinarian's
office. A busy vet might have dozens of animals he's seeing. If you
leave your dog there for care by the doctor, having a tag on helps
ensure that he isn't confused for another client's puppy.
