Important puppy
health facts - parvo and its symptoms
In dealing with
puppy health, one of the worst diseases you will see is parvo. It is
detrimental to puppy health and can be fatal. Parvo is actually
parvovirus, a virus that can be prevented with vaccine, but has no cure.
If you're
concerned about puppy health, you should watch for signs of parvo. They
include vomiting and diarrhea (with or without blood), refusal to eat,
depression, and possible fever.
It's important
to know that you are taking chances with puppy health when you take a
puppy who is not fully vaccinated to pet stores, parks, or anywhere else
other dogs may eliminate. Parvo is transmitted through the feces of
infected dogs.
If you suspect
a puppy health problem, you should visit your vet immediately. There is
a test to diagnose parvo, and you have to act quickly to help your dog
recover.
While there is
no cure, your vet will boost puppy health with fluids, medicines to stop
the vomiting and diarrhea, and possibly antibiotics to prevent secondary
infection. The treatment for parvo consists of preventing dehydration
and helping your dog fight the virus.
To promote
puppy health and prevent parvo, you should not allow your dog to come
into contact with the feces of other dogs. Surface areas can be
disinfected with a 1:4 bleach mixture, but the virus is capable of
living in the ground for a very long time - some experts say over a
year. If your house or yard has been exposed, do NOT bring puppies into
the area.
