How to adopt a puppy from a dog rescue
group
If you're looking to adopt a puppy, the
best place to look is a dog rescue shelter or the Humane Society in your
town. This is true even if you've got your eye on a purebred pet. Many
places where you can adopt a puppy that was abandoned or lost will have
pure breed dogs as well as mutts. More importantly, when you find a new
friend at a dog rescue site, you save a life!
Three simple steps to adopt a puppy
from a local dog rescue organization
First, before you head off to adopt a
puppy from just anywhere, do some research. Go to your vet's office and
ask the workers if they can recommend some local dog rescue groups for
you to check out. Chances are, they will know of more than one that
takes in stray puppies and dogs.
Next, when you arrive to possibly adopt
a puppy from one of the dog rescue shelters on your list, ask some
important questions. Do they put down the dogs after a certain amount
of time? If so, which of their residents are scheduled to be euthanized
next? Choose from among the puppies that have the least time left.
Finally, in most states when you adopt
a puppy, records are required that show the animal has been vaccinated
against rabies and other diseases. Be sure to get the dog rescue
group's staff to provide you with these documents. Most will do so as a
part of their normal adoption procedure, but it's ultimately your
responsibility as the new pet owner.
