A dog food comparison with preventing
periodontal disease as top priority

Advanced Canine Periodontal Disease
What is the
best diet for your dog's teeth? In this article, I'll attempt to make a
general dog food comparison, with preventing periodontal disease as the
determining factor. In any dog food comparison, I believe the impact on
periodontal disease is the most crucial, as this problem leads to many
others that are life threatening.
Review: dog food comparison - premium
dry kibble vs. barf diet (raw meat and bones) as they influence
periodontal disease in canines
Any dog food
comparison necessarily ignores bargain or off-brand kibble, given their
nearly total lack of periodontal disease prevention characteristics.
These low-price foods are loaded with salt and known health risks like
BHA, BHT, and Ethoxyquin.
So this dog
food comparison deals with premium dry kibble (Iams, Pedigree, etc.) vs.
the so-called barf diet (feeding raw meat and bones). The common
misperception is that hard, crunchy kibble prevents periodontal disease
best.
In reality,
having done a dog food comparison with our shelter's many dogs, I can
say without any doubt that the barf diet is superior. Preventing
periodontal disease is much more likely with either choice, but the
problem with premium dry kibble is the coating it leaves on the teeth.
This translates to more gum and tooth decay problems.
Our in-house
dog food comparison also proved to our veterinarian that the raw barf
diet was superior, not only in preventing periodontal disease, but for
overall pet health.
The only upside
in our dog food comparison in choosing commercial kibble was the lower
price (ignoring the periodontal disease issue entirely). Unless you
find a discount supplier for the raw meat and bones diet, expect to pay
about twice the monthly costs of Iams or Pedigree dry.
However, as our
dog food comparison clearly demonstrated, what you save buying the less
expensive premium dry brands may be more than overshadowed by the
increased vet bills. Remember that periodontal disease can cause health
problems throughout your pet's body. The barf diet wins.
