Pet sitting at home vs. dog
boarding at a kennel
Inevitably, owners who travel have to
decide on hiring someone to do pet sitting, or look for a kennel for dog
boarding. More and more, people are opting for pet sitting in their own
homes vs. using dog boarding facilities. There are many reasons for
this, including: convenience, less expense, and it's healthier for
pets.
Why pet sitting is becoming more
popular than dog boarding
First, pet sitting in the home is much
more convenient than outside dog boarding for most owners. You get a
trusted family member or friend to pay your pets a visit a couple of
times a day.
Pet sitting is also less expensive than
kennel dog boarding - usually a LOT cheaper! Most owners have family or
friends who will do the job for free or a very small fee to cover their
gas expenses. And your dogs will get interaction with a trusted human
they already know!
Another important benefit of pet
sitting at home relates to health issues. By law in most states, dog
boarding kennels must give the dogs they take in a Bordatella shot to
prevent the highly contagious illness, kennel cough. (Unless
veterinarian records indicate a recent dose has been administered). The
problem is, studies show that the vaccination doesn't take full effect
for up to seven days. Therefore, you might end up picking up a puppy
upon your return with a bad case of this illness.
Pet sitting is also
preferable because your animal will be in secure surroundings. He will
be far less likely to suffer separation anxiety or other nervous
afflictions if he can stay at home while you're away, instead of in a
small stall with chain link and a concrete floor at the dog boarding
kennel.
