With so many dog breeds, which is a good match for you?

As you know, there are many dog breeds from which to choose your next pet.  So how do you go about deciding which is best for your particular situation, assuming you don't have your heart set on one already?   A good first step is narrowing your choice by size.  Small dogs or large breed - a lot of it comes down to where you live and how you live.  Apartment dwellers are usually better off choosing among the small dog breeds.  Those with homes, especially with a fair amount of land as well, might opt for a large breed who needs room to romp and play.

Dog Breeds: Small Dogs

Yorkshire Terrier

These dog breeds are among the most popular choices in this category:  chihuahuas, pugs, and yorkshire terriers.  As small dogs go, each offers a lot of personality, energy, and are generally good-natured.  Small dog breeds are a common choice for older folks and singles, as they are easier to handle and care for.

Bichon Frise

These dog breeds are among the most popular choices in this category:  beagles, bulldogs, bichon frises.  Varying widely in energy and activity levels, these popular dogs usually appeal most to people with homes and a modest amount of yard acreage.

Dog Breeds: Large Breed

German Shepherd

These dog breeds are among the most popular choices in this category:  golden retrievers, rottweilers, german shepherds.  Care must be taken when choosing a large breed pet.  It's important to keep in mind that they require a lot of room, both inside and outside.  They eat more and they can be more destructive until trained, so they cost more.  And if you have small children, only golden retrievers (among the three listed) are reliably good-natured enough to risk around them.

With a bit of care and forethought, deciding which of the dog breeds best suits your situation isn't difficult.  Good luck!
