Don't want to
use
bark collars? Here are other dog training options.
While widely
available, bark collars are usually very expensive and can be painful to
your pet. There are dog training techniques that might save you from
having to use bark collars. Because different dog training methods work
on different dogs, you might have to try more than one, so be patient.
Wearing bark
collars constantly isn't practical. Changing your pet's behavior with
dog training can alleviate the problem instead of just the symptom.
Trainers recommend desensitizing your animal to the situations that
cause him to begin barking in the first place.
To avoid bark
collars, one method of dog training that can work is desensitization.
The first step
in avoiding bark collars with dog training is to determine what sets off
your pet. If the doorbell brings about barking fits, pet trainers claim
you can teach your animal to behave differently when it rings. He
reacts the way he does because of the chain of events the chime brings
about. If you change the events, you can alter his behavior.
Don't use bark
collars during this dog training exercise. Have a friend ring the
doorbell, but don't go to the door. Instead, pull out a treat and ask
your pet to sit. Do not punish him when he does not do it initially -
just reward him when he does obey and sits. Your friend shouldn't come
in, and you shouldn't go to the door. Just do this again and again
until you are fairly certain your dog will follow your instruction 9 out
of 10 times.
Instead of using bark collars,
gradually progress to the next step in this dog training situation by
giving your friend the puppy treats. Your friend rings the bell, you go
to the door, you tell the pet to sit, and your friend rewards him. This
will take time and patience, but it can be used in almost any situation
that causes barking. Good luck!
