Tips on which bark collar to buy from pet supplies stores

Sometimes a bark collar is the solution for excessive barking.  When shopping for pet supplies, you'll notice there are several available.  Before you buy a bark collar that could potentially harm your pet, you should know your options as not every pet supplies store carries them all.

Before you get a bark collar that shocks your dog, please consider an alternative.  While many pet supplies stores claim they are safe and not too painful, there is usually an easier way.  Any electric shock to your dog will hurt.  Try a collar on your leg to feel it for yourself.

A different bark collar to try is one that makes a very loud beeping sound.  We have purchased several of these from pet supplies outlets.  We've found they work better on smaller dogs, but some of our larger breeds actually barked at the sound.  Also, the noise is extremely loud - almost as loud as the barking itself!

The one advantage of the beeping bark collar is that it is much less expensive, so I recommend trying one.  Some pet supplies stores will actually let you try collars to see if they work.  They will take back an opened and worn product (within reason).

A more expensive and more effective bark collar is one that sprays a mist of citronella.  This is widely available online, but not as much at local pet supplies stores.  The spray is much more humane than the electric shock collars, and it worked even with our toughest barkers.

The citronella bark collar is about the same price (sometimes less) than the shock collars.  The only drawback is that you have to refill the citronella periodically.  You should purchase one or two refill containers from the pet supplies store if you buy this product.

Whichever bark collar you decide to use, don't keep it on your dog all of the time.  Buy regular collars from pet supplies stores for every day use as they are more comfortable, especially for sleeping.
