Choosing the right dog kennel for boarding
A dog kennel
should be a comforting place for boarding your dog while you are on
vacation. Dogs are generally afraid to be in a new place, so finding
the right dog kennel for boarding might take some effort on your part to
make him as happy as possible while you're gone.
Any dog kennel you consider for boarding should be visited
by you in person. Just calling someone on the phone and asking
questions doesn't give you enough information, and if you show up with
your pet and dislike the facilities, it might be too late to find
another place.
During your dog kennel visit, you should ask LOTS of
questions. Besides the boarding fees, you should find out how many
times a day the dogs are fed, walked, and have play time. Many kennels
will feed as specified - the number of times per day and type of food
you tell them to feed. There should not be additional charges for this.
You can find a dog kennel that is the most like your dog's
home environment. If you are boarding a dog who lives inside and is
used to sleeping on a bed, there are kennels available that have
comparable facilities. Expect higher costs for "luxury" accommodations.
While at the dog kennel, ask about vet trips during
boarding. Depending on travel distance, ask if they can take your pet
to his veterinarian for any emergencies or problems that arise. If not,
be sure to find out all you can about the vet who will be used.
If the dog kennel has boarding accommodations that are both
inside and outside, ask how often the door is opened for the dog to be
outside. During cold weather, make sure the inside area is dry and warm
after cleaning. If they simply hose down the whole area, it can be
uncomfortable and even dangerous for your pet.
Make sure the dog kennel gives boarding dogs plenty of
exercise. Some kennels let the dogs sit confined in a cage without
trips outside. Others will ask you how many times you'd like your
animal walked and/or played with - expect "per trip" or "per playtime"
charges, and be sure to ask how long each trip or play lasts. With
today's technology, some facilities even offer website viewing of your
pet while you're away!
With a little work, you can find the best-suited dog kennel
for boarding your pet. Sure, it will take some time, but your vacation
and his will be more relaxing and stress-free!
