When to use an automatic Dog Feeder
for Pet Food
An automatic
dog feeder is, of course, an easy and convenient way to dispense pet
food. You fill up the top part with kibble, and Fido always has a full
bowl. You can even buy an electronic automatic dog feeder that you can
set to dispense pet food only at certain times. These feeders are
great, but they aren't the right choice for some pets and people.
An automatic
dog feeder without a regulator of some kind (the Le Bistro brand, for
example, with a big water cooler-like container on top that constantly
dispenses pet food into the bowl) can be very harmful to dogs with
weight problems. Free-feeding pets can cause obesity. Even if he's
never been overweight, it could very well be a different story if you
decide to free-feed him.
If you set up
an automatic dog feeder while you are away at work, he's likely to eat
when he's not hungry. Pet food becomes a cure for boredom instead of
just sustenance. Not only is this not good for his health, it's going
to cost you more money.
If you have
multiple dogs, I would strongly suggest that you not get an automatic
dog feeder unless they are kept in separate rooms. Even if your animals
have never fought over pet food, it only takes one time. In my opinion,
there's no reason to take a risk.
Try a Timed Automatic Dog Feeder to
Dispense Pet Food
A timed
automatic dog feeder only dispenses pet food when it's time for Fido to
eat. These nifty feeders either leave a section open for a certain
amount of time, or they just release a certain amount of kibble into the
bowl when it's time to eat. They are better for your animal's health.
