How to find dog
trainers for your puppy (or adult)
There are a
wide variety of dog trainers available to teach your puppy. Here are
some easy steps to find effective dog trainers who won't mistreat your
puppy while teaching him right from wrong.
The best way to
find dog trainers is through referrals. Call (or visit the website) of
a shelter, breeder, or AKC group. Explain to them you want friendly but
effective training for your puppy. They usually have a trainer they
prefer.
Local pet
stores are a great place to find dog trainers. PetsMart, for example,
has training for your puppy available at their stores. It's usually
inexpensive, and you're involved in the sessions, which is important.
Look for
reward-based dog trainers. They believe in rewarding your puppy when he
does well, not punishing him when he doesn't.
There are dog
trainers who offer to board your puppy or dogs for a week while they
train them. It sounds great, doesn't it? You drop your pet off, go on
vacation, and come back to a well-behaved dog. The problems are you are
not there to see HOW your pets are trained, and you aren't involved.
The training is as much for you as the dog.
The most
important things to remember when hunting for dog trainers for your
puppy: First, you have to go through the training, too. The trainer is
basically teaching YOU how to tell your pet what you want. Second, keep
the sessions short. Don't expect to teach Fido everything all at once.
Training takes time and patience. If he's lost interest, stop and come
back to it later. The more fun it is for both of you, the better your
results.
