Should you get
dog insurance?
As a sign of
how important our pets have become, there are now many companies that
offer dog insurance. Because of the high costs of animal health, dog
insurance can be an affordable solution. While it definitely promotes
animal health, it isn't the best choice for everyone.
There are many
different dog insurance policies available. Because better animal
health lowers there costs, the companies insist on regular exams and
vaccinations at your vet.
Some of the dog
insurance companies will only pay certain amounts per year, so be sure
to read the fine print. Even if you've only used the minimal amount per
year, one major animal health cost can exceed what they are willing to
spend.
If you have
more than one pet, dog insurance may not be such a good deal. You will
generally pay about $30 per pet. Some animal health policies give you a
deal for additional pets, but it's very slight.
If you have
multiple pets, I would recommend skipping the dog insurance and opting
for a doggie savings account. If you have an animal health catastrophe,
you will have funds available without paying the higher premiums for
more than one pet.
Because certain
breeds are prone to ailments, become informed before making a decision
about dog insurance. Talk to people knowledgeable about your breed, and
ask them what major animal health problems are common. Then find out
the costs of treatments from your vet and decide if it's more economical
to be insured.
Almost every
pet adopted through petfinder.com qualifies for a special dog insurance
rate. It's a program they started to promote animal health of rescued
dogs and cats. See their site for more details.
