Treating and
preventing dog diseases like distemper
Some dog
diseases, like distemper and parvovirus, are devastating to dogs (and
their owners). These dog diseases often crop up in seemingly healthy
pets without any forewarning. What's more, distemper often mimics
benign problems, like the common cold, so many cases progress too far
and treatment for the puppy is no longer possible when it's true nature
is eventually discovered.
How to spot the
early signs of dog diseases like distemper
First and
foremost, dog diseases can often be diagnosed very early if regular
trips to the veterinarian are scheduled. Because afflictions like
distemper most often strike puppies, who have weaker immune systems,
it's crucial that owners visit the vet often in the early weeks. Early
diagnosis means a chance to survive it.
Owners who
suspect dog diseases but haven't had the animal seen by a doctor can
detect distemper by a couple of signs. First, yellowish-green or green
discharge from the eyes and nose is a classic indication. It's often
accompanied by sneezing and general lethargy.
While dog
diseases can manifest differently from animal to animal, another
hallmark of distemper is shaking or twitching. This happens because the
disease attacks the canine neurological system and makes muscles fire
continuously. Unfortunately, by this stage, it's rarely treatable and
the humane step is euthanasia.
It isn't
easy to prevent dog diseases as serious as distemper. But starting a
new puppy out right, with good nutrition and regular visits to the vet,
will go a long way toward keeping him healthy and disease-free.
