From all of the puppies available, you
chose him. The people at the pet store "oohed" and "ahhed" over him,
you poured through the selection of collars to get him his very own.
Now what?
Puppies
are a lot of work! If you've recently acquired one for the first time,
you probably are already recognized as a regular at the local pet
store. You may feel like you've failed Puppy Training 101, you've
chosen the wrong dog food, bought five collars that are all too big, and
you wonder why he keeps eating the wee wee pads! Never fear - you can
do this! Living with puppies is a wonderful stress reliever and
constant entertainment. Here's how to enjoy puppies, find your way
through the maze at the pet store, and decide which collars to return!
First,
keep in mind that puppies chew. Buy plenty of toys and bones to gnaw
from the pet store. When you take away your favorite shoe, give him an
acceptable chew toy.
Buy adjustable collars! Puppies grow very
quickly. If it's too big, he will try to eat it while it's on his neck,
and he could get his jaw stuck! If it's too small, it could be
painful. Take him with you to the pet store, try on several collars,
and decide which is most comfortable, durable, and appropriate.
Start a
grooming routine early! Getting puppies used to regular baths early on
is the key to making it a lot easier when he's an adult dog.
Don't punish your puppy for not immediately catching on
to potty training. Most puppies are physically unable to control their little
bladders until they're 6-9 months of age. They will be able to be trained
on where to go before that age, but they aren't able to hold it for any
length of time.
Finally, don't forget to
enjoy this time and take lots of pictures! New puppies are a pretty rare
experience, and you'll want to reminisce when he's older with more than just
your own memories.
