Which breeds of dog make the best pets
for your family?
Choosing among
the many breeds of dog when you're looking for new pets can be a bit
bewildering. Especially if you don't have your heart already set on a
favorite. Below, I've compiled a few popular breeds of dog and their
general temperaments and personality traits. It's by no means complete
or predictive of individual animals in each breed, but it will give you
a basic idea as you begin narrowing your choice of pets.

A few popular breeds of dog and their
suitability as pets
Some breeds of
dog, like Golden Retrievers and Labs, are well known for their mild
temperaments and excellent companionship traits. They make excellent
pets for most households, especially with kids and active young adults.
But they are not generally suitable dogs for older folks who are not
active, as they need a lot of interaction and play.
Breeds of dog
like Pit Bulls are at the other end of the spectrum. Bred to be
fighters, they are naturally aggressive (most, not all), and have
personalities that can go from gentle to vicious without any seeming
provocation. Extreme caution should be taken when making pets of this
dog breed. They are never recommended in homes with small children.
Smaller breeds
of dog, like Chihuahuas, are very popular across the spectrum of U.S.
households. As pets, this breed tends to be playful with humans, but a
bit stand-offish with other dogs. It's fiercely loyal, but generally
warms up to visiting strangers quickly (if you're nearby).
Active breeds
of dog, such as Border Collies and Cattle Dogs, are growing in
popularity. They are bubbly, outgoing, and make great pets for families
with kids. But they do need a lot of activity and big yards to run
around in, so they're not a good pet choice for apartment dwellers.
