Some popular dog names for large dogs
Popular dog
names follow changing patterns over time. This is true for naming
small, medium, and large dogs. The most ubiquitous choices of a few
decades ago are now hardly ever used: 'Spot,' 'Rover,' 'Fido.' These
formerly popular dog names have become clichés and generic terms used in
articles like this one. The most interesting new trend has been in
naming large dogs, which are making a comeback after playing second
fiddle to smaller pets for many years.
Recent popular dog names for the
renewed interest in large dogs
Popular dog
names used to often reflect some trait of the animal itself. 'Spot,'
'Buddy,' and 'Rover' are prime examples. But in recent years, and
especially with large dogs, the trend has been toward names that are
more human.
Popular dog
names now include: 'Max,' 'Sam,' 'Molly,' 'Jake,' and 'Lucy.'
Interestingly, it appears that this pattern has tracked right along with
a resurgence in people choosing large dogs as pets.
Popular dog
names also differ according to the gender of the naming pet owner. If a
male does it, he tends to pick a more manly name. Female owners more
often opt for feminine versions. This trend holds even for very large
dogs like Great Danes and Rottweilers.
One other
interesting fact about popular dog names relates to aggressive large
dogs who are reported for biting. More of them have a name that people
associate with meanness than not: 'Rocky' and 'Mugsy' are the top two.
