food: what it is and why it's important
Holistic dog
food is a phrase that relates loosely to any food given to dogs and
puppies that is natural and contains no artificial additives. Dog
treats also must adhere to this rule, or else you risk ruining the overall
positive effects. The goal is to improve your pet's nutrition in order
to make his whole body more in balance and healthy.
Examples of
non-commercial holistic pet foods include raw meat and bones (the
so-called 'BARF' diet), a vegetarian diet, and a combination of both
vegetable and raw animal protein concoctions. Veterinarians are split
on exactly which approach is best. In our house, we feed BARF and our
dogs and puppies rarely have health problems of any kind. As a bonus,
their teeth stay much cleaner from the bone crunching and no sugar
build-up.
Some holistic
commercial brands to consider
There are a few
commercial dog foods that pass muster from a holistic standpoint, but
not many. A good choice is Life's Abundance Premium Dog Food (by Dr.
Jane Bicks). I know a family who uses it and swears by it. I do not
have any personal firsthand knowledge, however, so take it with a grain
of salt. I do know that their ingredient list seems first-rate and
definitely all-natural.
Another good
holistic commercial food is the Wellness brand, which includes varieties
for both puppies and dogs. Both feature natural ingredients with no
potentially harmful artificial preservatives or other 'junk.'
However, from a
holistic perspective, I still favor feeding either raw meat with bones
(chicken, pork, beef) with occasional 'veggie slops,' or a daily diet
that combines meat with important vegetables and grains. You should
give your dogs supplements on a regular basis as well, just to make sure
all the important vitamins and minerals are covered to enhance your
pet's overall nutrition. And be careful in your treat choice!
